MRS GT-Racing team principal and founder Karsten Molitor has called the upcoming Michelin 992 Endurance Cup by Porsche Motorsport “the first step in the right direction” to establish an official Porsche endurance series, one that could potentially boast the same prestige as the German brand’s expansive Sprint Cup program.

Long-time CREVENTIC competitor MRS GT-Racing was one of the first teams to register an entry for the 992 Endurance Cup, and looks set to be among the most heavily-represented on-track on 6/7 September. The Baden-Württemberg-based outfit has already confirmed four, 992-generation Porsche GT3 Cups for Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. 

Tellingly, team principal and founder Karsten Molitor, a Porsche customer since 2003 (and for all but five years since MRS’ foundation in 1993), would like to see the German brand establish an official endurance series in the years to come, in the same vein as its myriad Sprint Cup competitions, and highlights the 992 Endurance Cup as a potential starting point.

“We think that this [the 992 Endurance Cup] could be the first step in the right direction,” Molitor explained to CREVENTIC. “Porsche Motorsport is well known for its one-make Cup competitions worldwide, and seeing them now to step into customer endurance racing is great!

“We´ve been racing in the 24H SERIES for more than 13 years now, and have always enjoyed great support from Porsche Motorsport… And now, we would like to see an official Porsche endurance series on the same level as the Porsche one-make Spring Cups. This 12-hours race could be just the beginning of another great Porsche Motorsport story.

“It’s for exactly this reason that we’ve got a lot of driver requests from all over the world, which just confirms our feeling.”

The team’s sales and driver manager Johan Koning is similarly enthused by the prospect of a Porsche-only endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps, citing the inaugural 992 Endurance Cup as a banner event for MRS GT-Racing.

“This was a great idea by CREVENTIC to organize this kind of endurance race,” Johan explains. “We will enter four cars, with drivers from different countries and from different one-make series around the world.

“Of course the 992 Endurance race will be a topper in 2024 for everyone. It will be a privilege to race at Spa-Francorchamps, and for sure, it’s going to be a great event. In our 30 years experience in motor racing, this will be a great point in our career and, we’re sure, for all the other teams participating also.”

The German outfit is similarly no stranger to CREVENTIC: MRS GT-Racing made its first start with the Dutch organizer at the 24H DUBAI in 2011, and has since racked up two class wins and three additional podiums at the event. Success Karsten Molitor and his team is looking to emulate at Spa. 

“We´re looking forward to a great and remarkable event. It reminds us of the Porsche World Cup once held on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with more than 100 Cup cars. Of course, we want to be as much successful as possible.”
